About Us

The Upstream Collaborative is a project led by Big Picture Learning (BPL) and supported by the generosity of the Stuart Foundation to redesign alternative education schools in California for equity and to learn about the process of redesign/implementation/transformation. This community of practice encompasses schools across California classified as “alternative” to redesign, support, and assess instructional strategies and school practices that offer students equitable access to deep and sustained learning. BPL provides education, training, and support to school leaders and their staffs to create new forms of high quality schools and programs that are student-centered and asset-based. This work will ultimately stimulate the spread of these new forms of alternative education throughout California to better serve the over two hundred thousand students who are enrolled in alternative education programs in the State.
